POSITION: Teacher, .40 FTE Chorus
REPORTS TO: Site Principals
SALARY: Certificated Salary Schedule
CREDENTIAL REQUIREMENT: A valid Single Subject Music credential
LOCATIONS: Redwood Middle School and Sequoia Middle School
Position PurposePerforms a wide variety of specialized and responsible tasks including the implementation of the district curriculum based on the grade level taught to develop students' general musical skills, understanding, and abilities; to develop appreciation of music as part of general culture; to discover and develop talents of students in the field of music; to develop knowledge and skills in listening and reading music.
Performance Responsibilities (essential Job Functions)
- Collaborate with school personnel, parents, and various community agencies for the purpose of improving the quality of student outcomes, developing solutions, and planning curriculum.
- Provides leadership and participates in programs and activities that promote diversity, equity and inclusion.
- Develop lesson plans and instructional materials and provide individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.
- Analyze learning capacity of students and provide for their needs; plans balanced general music program and organized class time so that preparation, rehearsal, and instruction can be accomplished within allotted time.
- Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
- Follow established policies and procedures for reporting incidents (e.g., child abuse, substance abuse, harassment, and violence).
- Initiate or participate in Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings with administrators, faculty, parents, and other parties involved to develop an IEP for eligible students.
- Instruct students for the purpose of developing their general musical skills, understanding, and abilities.
- Instruct students in social emotional learning, basic communication skills, and other general elements of the course of study specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
- Instruct varied activities in general music that will include vocal music, music reading, improvisational exploration, and creative development.
- Coordinate and conduct a culminating class observation/presentation as schedule allows.
- Maintain professional competence through participation in in-service education activities provided by the district and/or self-selected professional growth activities.
- Participate with other professional staff members in special programs for students.
- Participate with students in group activities for the purpose of developing students' leadership, teamwork, responsibility, and social skills.
- Perform a wide variety of specialized and responsible tasks; work independently; interpret and apply rules and regulations as appropriate.
- Perform attendance and basic business services as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Plan, coordinate, and direct the work of paraprofessionals as needed for the purpose of providing an effective school program and addressing the needs of individual students.
- Present a general music curriculum based on CA Music Standards and Frameworks (adopted 2019/2020) to achieve a sequential and scaffolded approach to musical skill development which meets the growing needs, interests, and abilities of pupils.
- Provide clear behavior expectations for students and monitor student behavior throughout the class and on the school campus.
- Skills are to be taught and developed in a sequential manner through a written curriculum that can be provided to site level leadership and district level leadership to ensure continuity and consistency across the district and for articulation to the middle school level music education. Instructional activities are to be planned in accordance with clearly defined objectives.
- Utilize District approved behavior modification techniques to implement the IEP goals and continually monitors student progress toward IEP goal achievement.
Education And Experience
- Bachelor’s degree, including courses needed to meet credential requirements
- A valid California Single Subject Credential in Music or an authorization in Music attached to a credential.
- English Learner Authorization

- Ability to communicate effectively, including giving clear, concise instructions, using academic language, and appropriate level of delivery, and listening without bias and providing appropriate feedback/reinforcement.
- Ability to compose and comprehend written communication.
- Ability to cooperate with the school faculty and administration in the development of a coherent program of instruction.
- Ability to differentiate instruction to meet diverse student learning needs.
- Ability to properly use and to care for the materials, supplies, and equipment employed in teaching.
- Ability to work effective with all racial, ethnic, linguistic, disability, and socioeconomic groups.
- Ability to work effective with students, parents, staff members, and community representatives in providing a rigorous educational program.
- Poise, tact, and good judgment, and commitment to the education of all students.
- Thorough knowledge of content and pedagogy necessary for effective instruction; enthusiasm for, and imagination and creativity in teaching the necessary skills for academic success; and commitment to the education of all students.
- Understanding of the physical, intellectual, social, and emotional developmental growth patterns of students.
