Cleveland to pay $4.8M to family of teen killed by stolen car during police chase

  • AP

Cleveland will pay $4.8 million to the family of a 13-year-old girl was struck and killed by a stolen car during a police pursuit. The settlement announced Monday is one of the largest in Ohio involving a police chase. Tamia Chappman was killed in December 2019 when a car driven by a 15-year-old boy jumped a curb and struck her as she walked from school to a library in East Cleveland. The driver of the stolen car was charged as an adult and is now serving a prison term. Authorities have said the police pursuit began after an off-duty Cleveland officer witnessed the carjacking and followed the vehicle.

  • By MIKE HOUSEHOLDER - Associated Press

Employees of the company tasked with rapidly personalizing jerseys for each first-round NFL draft pick as they are announced don’t need to travel very far for this year’s player selections in Detroit. STAHLS’ headquarters in St. Clair Shores, Michigan, is just 17 miles from the stage where NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will inform players that they have been selected by an NFL franchise. The STAHLS’ team has under two minutes to personalize each jersey backstage at the NFL Draft Theater. The draft gets underway Thursday. It marks the 13th year the company has worked behind-the-scenes at the draft.

Seattle Kraken GM Ron Francis leaves open possibility of changes after team misses playoffs

  • By TIM BOOTH - AP Sports Writer

Seattle Kraken general manager Ron Francis says evaluations are still ongoing about whether there will be changes with head coach Dave Hakstol or any of the coaching staff after the third-year franchise missed the playoffs. Francis said Monday that the team is still in the middle of examining what happened this season and he would not confirm whether Hakstol would return for a fourth year. Francis says people will read into that statement, but it's the same process the team has done after its first two seasons. Seattle finished 34-35-13 with 81 points a year after finishing with 100 points and reaching the Western Conference semifinals.

A new report says Mexico has abandoned protection of loggerhead sea turtles

  • AP

A new report finds that the Mexican government has largely abandoned protection and enforcement measures for loggerhead sea turtles. That has led to a spike in the number of turtles being caught up and killed in fishing nets. The findings were announced by the Commission for Environmental Cooperation, which functions as part of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada free trade agreement. The commission does not have any powers to enforce its findings, but the U.S. government could impose import bans on Mexican seafood if it concludes that Mexico isn’t enforcing protections. Loggerhead sea turtle deaths and strandings rose in 2018, the year President Andrés Manuel López Obrador took office.

Ryan officially announced his retirement as a player after putting up Hall of Fame-worthy numbers over his long career with the Atlanta Falcons but coming up shy of a Super Bowl championship. His decision to retire was not a surprise, given the quarterback had not played since a single disappointing season with the Indianapolis Colts in 2022. He worked last season as an analyst for CBS. Ryan threw for 62,792 yards and 381 touchdowns over his 15-year career, spent mostly as the face of the Falcons during the most successful era in franchise history.

Chinese generosity in lead-up to cleared doping tests reflects its growing influence on WADA

  • By EDDIE PELLS - AP National Writer

In the two years before the World Anti-Doping Agency cleared 23 Chinese swimmers of doping allegations, that country’s government contributed nearly $2 million in additional funding to WADA programs, including one designed to strengthen the agency’s investigations and intelligence unit. The Associated Press obtained confidential minutes from meetings of the WADA executive committee that lists China as having given $993,000 in 2018 and $992,000 in 2019, two years that coincided with one of its Olympians being elected as a vice president. There is no indication from the documents AP reviewed that the money was donated in expectation of a quid pro quo to gloss over positive drug tests.

Jury deliberating in Iraq Abu Ghraib prison abuse civil case; contractor casts blame on Army

  • BY MATTHEW BARAKAT - Associated Press

A lawyer for a military contractor being sued by three survivors of the notorious Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq says the plaintiffs are suing the wrong people. Lawyers for Virginia-based CACI told jurors Monday that the Army is responsible for any abuse. The lawsuit by the ex-detainees marks the first time a U.S. jury has weighed claims of abuse at Abu Ghraib. Twenty years ago the prison was the site of a worldwide scandal when abuse inflicted by U.S. soldiers became public. The suit alleges civilian interrogators supplied by CACI contributed to the torture while conspiring with military police. The jury began its deliberations Monday.
